Day 49

The Great Jemez Botanic Expedition of 2014, Second Try

Saturday

With warmer weather and no snow in the forecast, we set out to complete the data collection that was blown out by foul weather two weeks ago (see Day 35).  Indeed, it was a fine day and we got an early start.

Ty, Kent and I ran the transect from the south summit to the canyon floor in about 3.5 hours.  Glass was supremely helpful in documenting our activities.  This video snippet shows the kind of terrain we were traversing, the remains of the 2011 Las Conchas Fire.

Here Glass captures our sampling methodology:  Ty tosses our 1 m diam. sampling hoop over his shoulder.

This video shows our soil moisture meter, soil thermometer, sampling hoop, a typical north-facing sample, and the general environment.

This snippet shows Ty collecting the grasses and forbs for within a randomly sampled area.  Sampling locations were approximately 100 feet in elevation apart. We collected 4 samples at each elevation.

In this shot Kent and I begin the long slog up the ridge from the canyon bottom to our basecamp 500' above.

Glass was terrifically helpful in easily documenting our research.  Unfortunately, I did not find a way to record audio notes to text without a data connection.  We were in a remote NM canyon without cell service.

Without connectivity, there was also no way to update my blog, so this is one day late.

Finally, in the Please-do-this Department, Glass could use a video-to-panorama mode, just like Android smartphones and tablets.
