Day 20

Glass in the News

I see that the Washington Post has a piece today on what Glass is and is not.  In the comments was a link to an item titled "Five Google Glass #fails."  Glass continues to be a hot topic online and the buzz Google is generating is very impressive, even though there are detractors.

Day 19

Still Banging my Head against the Keyboard

The morning was spent trying to get Eclipse Indigo to pick up the Glass Sneak Peak from the Android SDK.  It's probably something simple, but despite installing 4.0.3 aka API 15 and running Indigo aka version 3.7, I've not been able to find a way to open the Compass sample for Glass.  :-(

Day 18

Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall

After downgrading my Python 3.3 to 2.7, I was able to get a sample mirror app to run locally.  Hurrah!  However, success with the GDK still eludes me.  Getting the proper SDK, ADT, and Eclipse versions installed so that the GDK is exposed is not at all obvious.

Day 17

Banging my Head against the Keyboard

Today was a day entirely at the computer and so, hardly any opportunities for Glass.  However, it was a day of diving into the Glass developer documentation and trying my hand at a first app.

Day 16

Other 100 Days

Just a quick jot as Day 16 gets off to a start.  I should apologize to the others out there with other "100 Days of Glass" concepts.  Joshua Merrill wrote an insightful piece back in September about his first 100 days with Google Glass.  I must admit, Joshua hits it on the head with all his observations.    And Riz Nwosu suggested that if he had Glass, he would create a 100daysofglass blog.  I think the idea of passing Glass around to one new person per day would have stumbled on the fact that the Glass interface takes some time to get used to.  For the first few days (at least for me), I was quite clumsy.

I'll have the usual daily posting later.  Cheers!

Day 15

A Relaxing Sunday

This morning was spent mostly at the computer without any Glass activity.  Nothing too special when I ducked out for lunch, but I was able to catch this moment as we loaded up with groceries at the Co-op.  Beautiful weather--I may not ever drive to the grocery store again.

Day 14

A Saturday with Glass

Today's morning chores were pretty much Glass-free, but as I headed out for lunch with Mom, it was "Glass on."  We headed off to Annie's Soup Kitchen, a venerable Albuquerque establishment for brunch.  Mom had the chicken and green chile quiche; I had the avocado and bacon omelet smothered in green chile.  :-)))

Day 13

Cats, Trust, and Photography

Since yesterday's topic seemed to center on Google Glass for distance learning and education, I thought I'd start out today's post by showing how I used the tool to make an instructional video.

Day 12

Thorsday

I was off to a good start with Glass this morning when, on the way to the office, I spotted a field with someone sitting in a lawn chair surrounded by geese and cranes.  I turned around and returned.  I parked some distance away so as not to scare the birds and approached on foot.

Day 11

Distance

Today's theme was "distance," as in distance learning.  Had a meeting with chem and bio folks to discuss their distance learning needs.  Demoed Hangouts and Glass as a means of delivering realtime educational content to our international partners.

Day 10

Toozday

'Twas another quiet day.  Glass-wise, I took a quick vid of my soil moisture meter as I watered the plants in the greenhouse.  Trying to get a feeling for how analog meters will appear when recorded with Glass.  With audio, it's always an option to speak the meter reading and it will be captured in the recording.  EverNote is another option, of course.

Day 9

Another quiet Monday has come and gone.  Drove to work with Glass (nothing special), whimped out on wearing Glass to the stand-up meeting, then worked at my computer for the morning (no Glass for that).  A quick errand run at lunch with Glass (no one noticed, nothing needed from Glass) was followed by another quiet afternoon at the computer monitor.  Frankly, bifocals will kill your neck if you wear them at the computer--too much up and down to keep the mid-to-close distances in focus as you scan the screen.

Day 8

Lou

OK, so it's Day 1000 in binary, if you remember that I started on Day 0.  This morning was a relaxing one of coffee (no help from Glass), laundry (no help from Glass there, either), and checking e-mail (ditto).  However, midday we set off for Mom's assisted living apartment to pick her up for lunch, which was going to be with my oldest brother Lou and his family from upstate NM.

Day 7

A lazy Saturday morning led to lunch at the Flying Star (6 points on 4sq, "the major is in the house, that's you")...
and then to Duran's Central Pharmacy.  There the pharmacy tech immediately noticed my Glass and an animated discussion followed.  I got to meet their Very Expensive optical pill counting camera and immediately it occurs to us that a Glass app could put that bad boy right out of business. It's amazing how much enthusiasm Glass generates with the right audience.  It also looks like Glass has the potential to be an excellent life-logger.

Day 6

A Valentine's Day Trip to the Vet

Bella Cat had her annual physical this morning.  Dr. Barb of Aztec Animal Clinic gave her a clean bill of health.  The health applications for wearable tech are in legion.  It was handy just to photo-document Bella's check-up.

Day 5

It's been an average Thor's Day at my day-job, but ridiculously warm in NM by February standards.  This day of Glass has been noteworthy mainly because I found a pair of polarizing sunglasses that fit my Rx frames.  This gives me the freedom to face the NM sun without frying my eyes (I'm half Swedish, what can I say?).

Day 4

Twas a pretty ordinary day of Glass.  Blue New Mexican skies and a view of IPOC on my way in to the office.

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Day 3

Tai Chi Toozday

Today I had scheduled a 30 minute meeting to discuss R&D proposal ideas with my manager.  Instead it turned into a wide-ranging 90 minute session with two others from the department as well.  In the end we didn't have any breakthroughs and, in fact, the project is now heading towards big data visualization.  The trick here is to find the scientific and engineering research that needs to be done to make Glass the center of R&D effort and not just a specialized output device.

Day 2

Monday, Monday

(to the tune of the Mamas and the Papas)

First day at work with Rx lenses/frames in my Glass... lost courage and didn't wear the set to the All Hands Meeting.  Frankly, I didn't wear them much at all because my latest check-up with the optometrist showed that for computer work, I shouldn't wear any glasses at all.  Since 80% of the day was in front of the computer, that was 80% of the day without Glass.

Day 1

A Day with Glass

Armed with new Rx lenses, it was time to try more-or-less a full day with Glass. So without further ado, here's a digital diary of a Sunday.

Day 0

"I am Locutus"

Here goes my attempt to document my daily experiences with Glass for the next 100 consecutive days.
